So, here lies my first blog post of my adult life. Within these [digital] pages I will describe the information of what may be going on in my design career, particularly focusing on my current studio class. As a fifth year architecture student at Iowa State University, the College of Design [the image to the right is of the building's atrium space] allows this new interdisciplinary design study to incorporate the demographics of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design. Together, working collaboratively, our endeavors under the guidance of the new department chair of landscape architecture, Professor Kenneth McCown, will help us to form an efficient and ambitious design proposal for the neglected downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.

The expectations of this course as listed in the syllabus are as follows:

  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically in the process of conceptualizing and developing design by considering pre-design issues including site and program analysis and creation, code information, sustainability, and social, cultural, and environmental factors.

  • Demonstrate the ability to attain relevant and insightful information through investigation of primary and secondary sources for issues that impact urban design and architectural decisions.

  • Demonstrate the ability to use relevant and insightful research to develop urban design and architecture based upon a premise related to urban design, historic preservation, community design and sustainability.

  • Demonstrate the ability to schedule and manage an urban design and architecture project though consistent growth and teamwork within the collaborative context.

With particular attention to the relevance of our work’s fundamental inquiry and synthesis to assimilate analytical ideas and resolve them within a cohesive and succinct thought. While process work guided by rationality and logic engaging the student through the depth and breadth of the studies explored in detailed research. In the final resolution of the project our work must be clearly presented with elegant representation in both craft and precision, while a presence commanding attention is portrayed across to create a harmonious synthesis.

I am quite excited about the new demands and challenges this class will present, especially as it is my final semester in completing my Bachelors of Architecture degree. A final studio field trip to the Downtown site of Las Vegas will be a new chapter to the continuing adventure that is my college career. In addition to my studio course, I will possibly be posting updates on other design related courses I am currently enrolled: Architecture 351 – Building Energy Performance Model with Associate Professor Ulrike Passe and Architecture 528B – Big and Tall: a history of construction with Professor Thomas Leslie. More likely than not the topics of each class will be intertwined in some way, shape, or form as to not go off too far down any rabbit holes.

Finally, welcome to my website! Please know that as a whole, this website will be under constant revision as to gain the best possible user experience.
